If you are preparing for your ICF credential, or getting more information about how to get one, you will have probably come across the performance evaluation step of the credentialing process. Despite all the information being available on the ICF website, it can be confusing for candidates to know exactly when to send a recording, what the format of the recording should be, and what to do with the transcript. We are answering all these questions below.
When to send the recording
A recording is required by the ICF in specific cases:
- For ACC, it is required when the coach goes through the ACSTH or Portfolio paths (if you have completed a Level 1 or Level 2 or ACTP programme, you do not need to send a recording).
- For PCC, you will be asked to submit two recordings if you go through the ACSTH or Portfolio paths.
- For MCC, all applicants have to submit two recordings.
The format of your recording
The recording must be a full coaching session between 20 and 60 minutes. If the recording is longer than 60 minutes, anything that happens after the 60-minute mark will not be assessed.
The recording can’t be edited, and it can’t be submitted in different files.
It must be a real coaching session between you and your client. The client can be another coach as long as they are a regular client (i.e. you have an active coaching engagement with them).
You will be asked to submit an audio only file, without any video or picture of you and your client.
The transcript
Make sure to follow the ICF guidelines when it comes to the transcript, they are quite specific about the format they want to see.
The transcript should be word-for-word. It needs to indicate who is speaking as well as the time the person starts speaking. What the coach and the client say should be transcribed in separate paragraphs. See below for an example of a transcript.
You will be asked to submit your transcript as a Word document.
Transcript example:
Coach (00:02): Hi, how are you?
Client (00:04): I’m great, how are you?
Coach (00:05): I’m very good. It’s a pleasure to see you today.
Client (00:08): Likewise. I have been looking forward to this session.
Coach (00:12): That’s great. Let’s dive in then! What would you like to focus on today?
The language
The recording can be assessed in the following languages:
- English
- French
- German
- Hungarian
- Italian
- Polish
- Spanish
- Swedish
You can send a recording in a language that is not in the list. In this case you will need to submit a transcript in your language, as well as an English translation of the transcript.
